Title
Forth Bridge - Inchgarvie superstructure at full height
Description
Photograph of the Inchgarvie superstructure at full height. Owing to its increased dimensions and its insular position, this cantilever was naturally the last to attain its full height. We have here a very perfect picture, showing the diagonal struts, the vertical ties, and a large section of the internal viaduct complete, the depth of which at this point is 12 feet. Attention is called to this fact, as in future illustrations it will be observed to decrease rapidly as it nears the extremities of the cantilever arms. The lifting girders for struts, previously referred to, will be observed above the bottom member in course of construction, and speak for themselves. The whole of the wind bracing is complete, as far as position is concerned, but much riveting has yet to be done. Transcription from: Philip Phillips, 'The Forth Railway Bridge', Edinburgh, 1890.
