A fully equipped and airy gymnasium gives to the members ofthe classes formed for systematic exercise, under a trained teacher,superior opportunities for restoring physical tone and vigor; andthe rooms in this building, furnished for art and industrial pur-poses, with skilled instructors, are most important adjuncts totreatment. The treatment of the patients takes, as it undoubtedly should,a large share of earnest thought and consideration. Respecting thepatient from the hospital standpoint, there are two distinct func-tions to keep in mind, (1) the treatment of the diseases, and (2)the exacting responsibility of caring for a helpless and dependentperson, removed from his home and relations. The clinical andpathological laboratory, as well as the psychological department,have added their not inconsiderable share towards the generalresults. His problem involves, more thanit does the ordinary practitioner, the regulation of the individual,superadded to the medical care of the patient. He should bringinto service not only the proper use of rest and exercise, massage,thermal and mechanical agencies, and the disciplinary entailmentof such treatment, but also the utilization of every measure whichmay bring about a control of will power, a reinforcement of theintelligence, and a regulation of the emotional sphere. Fear shouldbe conquered, doubt dispelled and despair eradicated. In the soilfrom which they have been uprooted should be planted the seedwhich shall spring up into hope, courage, contentment, equanimityand self-reliance. The permanent value of these remedial agentshas not been overlooked in furnishing the patients with quiet,homelike influences and surroundings, wholesome physical exerc
