English: Built in 1912, this Beaux Arts-style building was designed by Cass Gilbert and funded by Andrew Carnegie to serve as the Central Public Library for the city of St. Louis. The building is clad in marble with arched bays on the main floor, a front loggia with arched openings, chandeliers, mosaic vaulted ceilings, and bronze doorways and gates, a raised basement, one-over-one double-hung windows on the first floor and third floor, a green terra cotta tile hipped roof, a cornice with modillions and dentils, spandrels with cartouches and medallions flanking the third floor windows, a large staircase up to the front entrance, bronze flagpoles and lampposts, a stone railing around the exterior terrace, and a rusticated base. The interiors feature vaulted and coffered ceilings with stencils and decorative plasterwork, decorative chandelier, pendant, torchiere, and sconce light fixtures, marble cladding and doric pilasters and columns, bronze screens, stained glass windows, and wooden bookshelves, chairs, and tables. The building today continues to serve as the central branch of the St. Louis Public Library.
