Das Bild zeigt das Römerhöfchen in einem Zwischenzustand Ende der 1890er Jahre, der so nur kurze Zeit existierte. Bis 1891 trennte ein Mauer die Südseite des Höfchens, die mit den dazugehörigen Häusern Silberberg und Alt-Limpurg der gleichnamigen Ganerbschaft gehörte, von der nördlichen Hälfte mit den Römerwachen. Erst ihre Beseitigung und das Niederlegen der Mauer schuf das Römerhöfchen in seiner heutigen Form. Da die westliche Hälfte mit dem Haus Frauenrode ab 1900 zugunsten des historischen Rathausneubaus fiel, und auch die reichen Fachwerke des Hauses Silberberg sowie sein Treppenturm durch Max Meckel saniert wurden, blieb der hier gezeigte Anblick nicht lange erhalten.
Urheberrechtliche Ansprüche sind definitiv erloschen, da der Urheber, Carl Friedrich Fay, 1918 verstarb und somit über 70 Jahre tot ist.
