Summary edit

Description
English: Photographed at Stoll Lake at Massanoga - site of the Sawyer-Stoll Lumber Mill.

'Information about Fred is sketchy, but we know he worked at Sawyer-Stoll lumber operation beginning there around 1939. He had many talents - as a poet, log roller, bagpipe player; sometimes combining these skills for the entertainment of all. He published two books of poetry about the local folklore and lived more or less as a hermit in a cabin a few kilometres north of Mazinaw Lake. His work at Sawyer-Stoll was mainly operating the jack ladder, making sure the logs entered the mill properly, until he was close to seventy. It is out understanding that Fred was born in Bainsville in Eastern Ontario, near Alexandria on the Ontario-Quebec border. Fred was an interesting character and epitomizes the lumbering spirit of the area which is captured in the Pioneer Museum in Cloyne.'
