Fresco with a meal preparation Roman, 1st-2nd century AD Fresco The J. Paul Getty Museum, Villa Collection, Malibu, California 79.AG.112 In this fresco, two men are preparing the carcass of a cloven-hoofed animal, perhaps a calf or a fawn. The figure on the right grasps the animal's feet, while the other slices into its belly with a wooden-handled knife. The large silver vessel on the right was used to dilute wine with water at dinner parties, suggesting that this scene relates to a banquet. The silver tray on the left holds garlic and other foodstuffs. This sort of everyday scene is rarely found in Roman villa decoration, suggesting that this fresco may have adorned a tavern rather than a home. |
