Deutsch: Friedrich der Große als Perseus (1789) von Bernhard Rode - Allegorie auf den Beginn des Siebenjährigen Krieges 1756. „Im Nachlaßinventar Rodes von 1798 ist das Gemälde folgendermaßen erfasst: ‚Friedrich der zweite, König von Preußen, ist im Begriff sein Schwerdt zu ziehen, da er in dem hellpolirten Schilde, welchen ihm Minerva vorhält, die schlafende Medusa erblickt.' Die Dynamik des Vorgangs wird durch den rücklings ausweichenden kleinen geflügelten Genius mit dargebotener Rüstung, Waffe und Lorbeerkranz hervorgehoben. (. . .) Bereits 1788 fixierte Ramler den offenbar erprobten Bedeutungsträger: ‚Die Weisheit wird durch die mehr oder weniger gewaffnete Minerva vorgestellt, die den schlangenhaarigen Medusenkopf entweder auf dem Brustharnisch oder auf dem Schilde führt. Neben derselben steht mehrerentheils eine Eule, das Sinnbild des Nachtwachens, oder der Schlaflosigkeit: weil dieser Vogel im Finstern sieht.
