English: The Friendship House (also known as The Maples, Maple Square, or Duncanson House) located at 619 D Street, SE (same as 630 South Carolina Avenue, SE) in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Designed by William Lovering in 1795, the Friendship House is an example of Georgian architecture and is the oldest privately owned residence extant on Capitol Hill. The first owner of the home was William Mayne Duncanson, whose house guests included George Washington. Additional past owners include Sentaor John Clayton and journalist Emily Edson Briggs. Friendship House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 18, 1973 and is a contributing property to the Capitol Hill Historic District. The building currently serves as a community center housing various social services organizations. Its 2009 property value is $5,468,400. |
