DescriptionFrisco overhead wires 127549.jpg |
English: Detail of tram and trolley coach overhead wires at the junction of Steuart Street and Don Chee Way near Don Chee Way and Steuart Station and the Ferry Plaza on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, CA. At this point the overhead line of route N Judah of the Muni Metro light rail system (I call them trams) crosses the overhead lines of the trolleybus system.
The trolley bus lines run from top left to bottom right of this view. The trolley bus line further away from the camera is electrically connected to the tram line. This implies that they are at 600 V DC relative to ground. The nearer trolley bus line is insulated from the tram line - we see a bridge piece going over to provide electrical continuity. This line must be at or near ground potential - so why is it insulated? The answer probably includes the need to provide a reliable return path. Also there may be a risk of unwanted electrolytic effects if the return was allowed to go via earth. |
