ery. Amongst them was the sonof the Lamido of Garua, sent by his father towelcome us. On the 20th of June we set out in the early morning,and a two hours ride brought us within sight of theoutskirts of Garua. Like a castle set on a hill, itswhite towers gleamed in the sunlight against the darkbackground of the mountains. Garua may well beproud both of its superb position, and of its steadilyincreasing population. The days passed rapidly in visiting the Lamido andthe town, and in riding about the neighbourhood.One day we made an excursion to the interestingFalli hamlets on the Tengelin plateau. Their mush-room-like huts are crowded together on the plateau,and in the valleys and gorges of the mountains. Theirimpregnable position, as well as their poisoned arrows,safeguards their independence. Many of the ham-lets are surrounded by a Euphorbia hedge, and wealso saw some large monkey trees. Early in July we bade farewell to Garua, and asteel-boat conveyed us down the Benue homewardbound !
