When I asked what they wanted themfor, they replied that the skull was a very potent remedyfor insanity, from which one of the villagers was suffer-ing. Even the water in which the skull had beenboiled was said to be a certain cure. We saw somehippopotami in the Bahr Nditi, a wide stream borderedby beautiful scenery. We reached Busso after travelling for nine days,mostly by short stages. We used to march in theevenings for three or four hours, and then sleep in thebush, often without water so that we might husbandour supply for the next day. On the SOth of April, after another waterless nightin the bush, we reached the large village of Delfine,which is only a few hours march from Busso. It isa twenty-year-old Bornu settlement, and here we couldgive our thirsty beasts both rest and water, the latterbeing clear and coming from a well sixty feet deep. W
