Description
English:

A row of medium-sized trees with leafy branches lines a walkway in a formal garden.

The 1939 Master Plan prescribed a Colonial Revival Garden behind the Derby House. It called for the planting of apple, cherry, crabapple, and pear trees along the perimeter of the gravel pathway that framed the Derby House garden area. A gift from the Essex County Agricultural School, the fruit trees included Endicott and Seckel pears, colonial varieties of cherries, and Siberian crabapple trees. Planting occurred in April and May of 1939. Numerous species and trees remain from the 1939 Master Plan plantings including lilac, oak, maple, and horse chestnut. Two apple trees and one cherry tree existing in the rear yard were incorporated into the new planting plan. American elms behind the Custom House have been replaced in kind with disease resistant cultivars. Apple, cherry, crabapple and pear trees continue to line the perimeter of the gravel pathway that surrounds the Derby House garden. Several of the trees have been replanted.
