| Description |
The Fox and Hounds Public House, Barley, Hertfordshire, along with its iconic inn sign with painted silhouette figures of huntsmen and dogs chasing a fox into the gables (<a href="http://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-162541-the-fox-and-hounds-public-house-with-inn" rel="nofollow">Grade II</a>). The pub was formerly called The Waggon and Horses, and the Fox and Hounds was originally elsewhere in the village, so named when a fox really did escape hounds by fleeing into a gap in the thatch in the early 18th century. The original Fox and Hounds burnt down in 1950, the Waggon and Horses then changed its name to keep the story alive, and the inn sign was built to replace the one that straddled the High Street at the old pub. Hertfordshire GOC's 8 June 2013 walk, which was a circular walk starting in Barley and visiting Smith's End, Barkway, Reed and Newsells Park Stud (also coming close to Nuthampstead and Royston), with views into Cambridgeshire.
