Summary edit

Description
English: Galena from the Lisheen zinc-lead mine (closed in 2015), south Ireland. Metals like zinc and lead are used in many everyday items, and are important in many green technologies.

In this photomicrograph, there are two crystal forms of galena (white) shown. The more perfect forms in the bottom left represent galena that grew into open space from metal-bearing fluids. While the galena in the top right formed by replacing the original pyrite. Pyrite is shown by the dark grey mineral.

This image was taken at Memorial University Newfoundland (MUN), Canada as part of research at the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) and UCD. Scale included.
