Description

The William Galt house on the NW corner of Ninth Street and Grant Place (now G Place), NW, as shown in the 5/5/07 Washington Times shortly before its demolition. Geotagged.

Galt was born in Alexandria on 11/18/1825 and worked as a jeweler at the D.C. shop founded by his father, Galt and Brother, for over 30 years. He later founded and served as director of the Norfolk and Washington, D.C. Steamboat Company and the Alexandria Fire Insurance Company. His detailed Washington Evening Star obituary reports that Galt gave generously to local charities, including the Home for Incurables and the Central Free Dispensary.

Galt lived in this house for forty years, and claimed to have attended a school that stood on the site as a child. He died there on 6/12/02 and is buried in Congressional Cemetery.

Galt and Brother closed in 2001, after nearly 200 years of continuous operation.
