Description

5 frame mosaic of Ganymede taken during Voyager 2's flyby of the moon on July 9, 1979. This image is captures the southern two-thirds of Gilgamesh Crater. This image has been processed by creating a duplicate layer, setting the blending mode to 'difference', and offsetting it by a pixel. This method creates a crude surface roughness map, highlighting features that might not be visible otherwise. Here, we see a large arc of flat material ringing Gilgamesh Crater, suggesting that this crater system is much larger than it appears under normal lighting conditions.

During the flyby, Voyager 2 was not able to capture the moon in a single mosaic due to the angular size of Ganymede and the spacecraft's motion. Instead, it took multiple mosaics, each covering a different part of the surface, with a bit of overlap between each.
