Description

The Anson Engine Museum in Poynton, Cheshire collection.

L Gardner and Sons, Patricroft, Eccles. Lawrence Gardner set up business in 1868 in Upper Duke Street Manchester as a general engineer. He died in 1890 and his sons took over, machining and manufacturing electrical dynamos, and dentists chairs. In 1894 they produced their first Robiinson patent hot air engine- in 1906 they exhibited a 65HP marine paraffin engine. They were making diesels. In 1944 Gardners were producing three types of diesel engines - LW, L2 and 4LK which came in several sizes of cylinder blocks. In 1950 the shares were listed and in 1977 the company was bought out by Hawker Siddeley but the name lives on
