Description

Another old favourite for a British enthusiast is this F-111E, formerly serving with the 20th Fighter Wing based at RAF Upper Heyford. The F-111 was the first production variable-geometry wing aircraft. The type carried out the longest fighter combat mission in history when 18 aircraft carried out a strike against Libya from the UK in April 1986. The flight took 13 hours and covered 6,400 miles. F-111s also served in the Gulf War of 1991, dropping nearly 80% of the wars laser-guided bombs. The last F-111s were retired from USAF service in July 1996. Full serial 68-0055. c/n 224. On display in the 'Century of Flight' Hangar at Warner Robins Museum of Aviation. Georgia, USA.
