l forgot. Nothing but the exigencies of warcould have driven them to it. But they couldnot be driven away in the deep snow, and withso small a command it was impossible to sparemen to attempt the rescue of the poor, dumb,helpless beasts. In order to escape from the situation, whichwas most threatening, for the Indians wereassembling on the bluffs overlooking the com-mand, General Custer put on a brave front,and ordered the band to play Garryowen,and the colors to be unfurled; the skirmisherswere sent on in advance, and the command setout in the direction of the other villages. TheIndians, perceiving not only the determinedadvance, but appreciating that every sign ofpast victory was apparent, supposed the tri-umphant troops were about to march on thevillages below, and they fled before the column.After dark the order to countermarch wasgiven, and as rapidly as possible the tiredtroopers rode back to the train of supplies thathad been endeavoring for days to make itsway to the regiment.

We were thenordered, with the regiment, to Kentucky. Afterbeing there two years, we went to Dakota inthe spring of 1873. When orders came for the Seventh Cavalryto go into the field again, General Custer wasdelighted. The regiment was stationed in var-ious parts of the South, on the very disagree-able duty of breaking up illicit distilleries andsuppressing the Ku-Klux. Fortunately for us,being in Kentucky, we knew very little of thisservice. It seemed an unsoldierly life, for atrue cavalryman feels that a life in the saddle onthe free open plain is his legitimate existence.
