Summary edit

Description
English: General Gregor MacGregor (1786–1845), who, after fighting in the South American wars of independence, returned to Britain and falsely claimed to have been made "cacique" of a fictional Central American country, "Poyais", all in an effort to defraud land investors. Nearly 200 died in 1822–23 in connection with MacGregor's deception, having emigrated to his invented country.
