l days.Both of these are now part of the public school systems of their respectivecities. PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Last, but not least, is the gieat public school system of Georgia. TheState Constitution of 1868 made provision for a thorough system ofgeneral education, to be forever free to all children of the State. At ameeting of the Georgia Teachers Association held in Atlanta in August,1869, a committee was appointed to report upon a school system adaptedto the condition and wants of Georgia. The committee consisted of Pro-fessor Gustavus J. Orr, for many years professor of Mathematics inEmory College, chairman; Bernard Mallon, long the superintendent ofthe public schools of Savannah, and afterwards of Atlanta; John M. Bon-nell, then president of Wesleyan Eemale College at Macon; Martin V.Calvin of Augusta, and David W. Lewis, president of the North GeorgiaAgricultural College at Dahlonega. Williams, principal of theGeorgia Academy for the Blind; Professor Bernard Mallon, and ProfessorGustavns J. Orr. After nine hours spent in discussing the report, sectionby section, it was adopted as written, xit another meeting of the GeorgiaTeachers Association, held at Macon in November, 1869, the reportafter being discussed for an entire day was unanimously adopted.
