Description German mine laying submarine UC 42. Commissioned in November 1916, this UCII class U-boat carried out six patrols and sank 13 ships during its brief career. Its armaments included one 8.8 cm gun, 18 mines and seven torpedos. The vessel and all hands aboard were lost in an explosion of its own mines off the southern coast of Ireland on 10 September 1917
