| Description |
I am on Germantown Avenue awaiting the No. 23 service to Chestnut Hill. The No. 23 used to be a streetcar service, whose tracks are still visible here, but the service has been run with buses since the early 1990s. Upper-middle class Chestnut Hill, at the northwestern city limits, was the 19th Century version of an exurb, connected to Philadelphia by two rail lines and this trolley line, but otherwise a world away from the bustle of Center City. My long ride to Chestnut Hill will go through working-class ethnic neighborhoods of Nicetown and Germantown, before passing through a more middle-class neighborhood of Mt. Airy. |
