She was the daughter of Samuel Kohn, who was born on July 18, 1851 in Beiersdorf, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, and who died on 28. December 1922 in Bamberg, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, and his wife Ida, nee Dinkelspühler, who was born on December 9, 1860 and who died on April 25, 1917 in Lichtenfels, Upper Franconia, Bavaria. Both were buried on the Jewish cemetery of Lichtenfels which got completely destroyed by the Nazis in 1938 and 1941. Lilly Kohn was the wife of Hans Gerst who was born on December 31, 1886 in Bamberg, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, and who died on March 24, 1953 in New York City.

Both were the parents of political scientist Walter Samuel Gerst-Kohn, who was born on May 16, 1923 in Lichtenfels, Upper Franconia, Germany, and who died on November 27, 1998 in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. He taught primarily at University of Illinois and published as Walter S. G. Kohn in the United States and in Germany.
