Last summer ninety-one elephants were killed in one day near Gasua, andthirty-seven on another occasion in the neighbour-hood of Gubere. At this rate the elephants will soonbe entirely exterminated. The same may be said of india-rubber. The treesare cut about in the most senseless way, and newones are hardly ever planted. The Company direc-tors are perfectly satisfied so long as they get largetemporary dividends, and the agents care fornothing but their commission, and no one takes thetrouble to enquire whether there will be any india-rubber or ivory left in the years to come.
