Unlike what it says the original given title 'Normannisches Mädchen (Girl in the National Dress of Normandy)', this is a young girl wearing a Ciociaro costume, traditional of the historical territory of Ciociaria, south of Rome. The traditional dress of Normandy is different, look here

This work was completed during Chase's student years of study in Munich from 1872-1878.
