Title |
glass setting (face) |
||
Description |
English: Cut faceted glass stone, circular in plan and diamond-shaped in profile, within a circular silver setting that is made from a thin band of pinched plate with a machined edge, now broken. The setting might have been part of a composite piece of jewellery or an ornate buckle, but looking at ESS-CAABF3, it compares well to this button, which has been identified by Judy Rudoe as a silver sleeve button formed of a hemisphere with a colourless faceted stone and its loop missing. The rims of the settings are engraved with parallel lines. This is a common type in use throughout the 18th century. The surface of the glass has been worn and pitted by being in the sand so that it is difficult to see any internal bubbles but these can be made out under a microscope.
Murdoch (1991) illustrates similar settings on a buckle on page 170, No.476, which is dated from the 1730s or 1740s, and a pendant and earrings on page 171, No.477a, which is dated to the 18th century. |
