erhaps you will think this is alate day for it. Two years ago last summer the monument was erected. I waited beforehaving a picture taken, to have the lotgraded and finished. One face of the monument bears his in-scription and his wifes. The other face hashis fathers and mothers name. My wife, who was a cousin of Mr. Mar-tin, suggested that some honey-bees be carvedin the foliage toward the top. 1 dont knowthat you can distinguish them in the picture,but they show plainly on the granite. Johnhelped lay out this cemetery, and beforeleaving for California he removed the bod-ies of his wife and parents from another cem-etery to the lot he had purchased, and laidthe foundation for a monument. He is therewith all his own family, and many of hiskindred in near-by graves. The monument is of dark Barre granite;whole height 5 ft. )0 in.; width, 3 ft. 8 inch-es; thickness, 1 ft. 8 in. Feb. 15 ■wrote for many jears for these columns un-der the nom. cle j^lume of Rambler. He firstbegan his writings as a traveling correspond-ent in the vicinity of his old home. His woikpleased so well ihat we sent him across thecountry to California, then up into Oregonand finally into Cuba From all of thesepoints he sent in regular notes of travel il-lustrated by his pen and camera. Perhapsthe writings of no correspondent we everhad were more eagerly read than his. Hewas our funny man, and yet at the sametime with all his fun-making he picked upand gave to our readers many a valuableidea which, with the aid of his camera, heplaced before ovir readers.
