Summary edit
DescriptionGlenfieldTunnel01.jpg |
English: The, now sealed, west portal of Glenfield Tunnel built by the Leicester and Swannington Railway and opened on 17 July 1832. It has the distinction of being only the 2nd passenger railway tunnel in the world, being just beaten by a tunnel on the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway.
Taken over successively by the Midland Railway, the London Midland and Scottish Railway, and British Railways, this part of the line was closed in April 1966 and the tunnel was subsequently sold to Leicester City Council. |
