Net als zijn vader Willem vervaardigde Joan Blaeu land- en zeekaarten, atlassen en globes. Deze werden aangepast na nieuwe ontdekkingen. De vierde editie van de globe toont de wereldbol met tal van lege plekken; die waren nog niet in kaart gebracht. Zo is van Australië alleen de westelijke en noordelijke kustlijn te zien, in 1644 ontdekt door Abel Tasman. Aardglobes of ´wereldclooten´ vormden altijd samen met een hemelglobe een paar. Deze aardglobe is gemaakt na 1644. Dit blijkt uit de weergave van stukken kustlijn van Australie, die in 1644 waren ontdekt door Abel Tasman. Zoals op deze globe te zien is, bleef Tasman in de veronderstelling dat Australie aan Nieuw-Guinea vastzat. |
