| Description |
English: Gloucester station, entrance 1995. View eastwards to the entrance, which was on the 'Down' side from the point of view of trains from the direction of Cheltenham, Birmingham etc., also from Swindon and London, to South Wales. This is the dreadful 1977 rebuild of the ex-GWR ('Central' from 1951) station, which after the closure on 1/12/75 of the ex-Midland station ('Eastgate' from 1951) and the Tuffley Loop used by Midland line trains towards Bristol etc. has had to handle all trains converging on Gloucester. The 'Central' designation was dropped and Gloucester's station has reverted to the semi-terminal role in which it operated until the through Midland station was built in 1896. All trains reverse here, except those to/from South Wales, which are relatively few compared to 50 years ago |
