English: Gold Gorgon Head from the Cuirass (Breastplate) of Philip II of Macedon tomb at Aigai, Vergina Greece 4th century BCE. This is one of two Gorgon heads that adorned Philip's linen and leather ceremonial cuirass. Popular in ancient times, this type of ornament was thought to offer protection from evil. According to legend, anyone who looked directly at a snake-haired Gorgon would turn to stone.
