DescriptionGolden Ball and Cross on Dome of St Paul's Cathedral, London EC2 - geograph.org.uk - 1089422.jpg |
English: Golden Ball and Cross on Dome of St Paul's Cathedral, London EC2 In the late 1960s I went into St Paul's and at that time you could just keep on going up. I went out on to the balcony area you can see with the railings and finally it was possible to climb up a vertical ladder so that you were up in the golden ball on the top. You could look out through the slits you can see below the ball to get a view all over London. I don't think you can do that now.
As a young boy I went to the very top in the 1950’s. The view was amazing, especially looking down on the dome below. |

When I was a young girl of about 4 years I went up a ladder inside the Golden Cross. (I was the only one allowed to do so) That would have been about 1952. Everyone asked me, "what did you see?". I saw buildings! My sister, who was 3 years older was not able to go up. Such a shame. E. Mann
