Summary edit
DescriptionGoraghwood lock, Newry Canal (1) - geograph.org.uk - 1394643.jpg |
English: Goraghwood lock, Newry Canal (1). When 1183060 was taken the lock was being tidied by the removal of surplus vegetation. Nature thought otherwise and has reclaimed the lock - access to the fence is possible but not too easy. This is the view east across the lock. The gates are no longer present. Back in 1882 there was a suggestion that the Newry Canal be rebuilt to allow small sea-going ships to reach Portadown. The scheme involved making the Bann deeper to reverse its flow. If it had gone ahead the canal would have been lockless from here to Lough Neagh. See also 1394810. |
