Description
English: (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

Gossan is a porous, iron hydroxy-oxide rock formed by oxidative weathering of various sulfide deposits - in this case, a massive sulfide deposit. The gossan itself is composed of hematite (reddish), goethite (brownish), and limonite (yellowish-brown).

This sample is from a mining district in the Blue Ridge of Virginia. It was once mined as a source of iron ore. The original massive sulfide deposit was likely very similar to still-existing examples in this section of the Blue Ridge. The sulfide minerals include pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Non-sulfide minerals include quartz, feldspar, amphibole, chlorite, biotite mica, dolomite, and garnet.

Locality: Betty Baker Mine, northeastern Gossan Lead Mining District, north of the town of Hillsville, northern Carroll County, southwestern Virginia, USA (apparently located at 36° 50' 44.20" North latitude, 80° 43' 25.50" West longitude)
