This isomitted in the two bays next the crossing which arerather narrower than the others, and in another bay onlyhalf of it exists, the outer half being omitted. Wherethis rib is complete it naturally cuts in half the outerclerestory window of the aisle above the chapels. Roomis made for this aisle clerestory by keeping the chapelslow. This is a great gain outside, for they do not dwarfthe central apse like those at Amiens. The apse though polygonal within is round outside,but the bays being narrow the distortion of the windowarches is not obtrusive. The flying buttresses are muchless crowded than at Amiens and much simpler, and theexterior of this part is extremely successful (Fig. 51).There are no flying buttresses to the intruded piers, forwhich indeed there is no room, but only a flat shallowbuttress
