Kirkstall,Furness, Valle-Crucis, and Buildwas (Fig. 93), whichhave best preserved their original plans, have shortaisleless presbyteries ending square without any easternaisle or ambulatory. Abbey Dore and Byland (Fig. 93)have square east ends, and Byland has an eastern aislealso square. Dore has the same with the addition ofchapels ; but originally it ended probably like Buildwas.Netley, Rievaulx, and Tintern (Fig. 93), which are laterin date, have presbyteries with two aisles all run out tothe same length, ending square and without eastern aisleor chapels. Fountains ends square with an easterntransept, like that at Durham, though it is not part ofthe original plan. There is one still remaining at theCistercian church of Pontigny in Burgundy. The strict Cistercian rule forbad all ornamental details Ornamentbut such as were of the most abstract form.
