ted andwell moulded: the original windows were simple lancets,those in the clerestory in groups of three lights of whichthe middle one is the highest (Fig. 94). The triforiumhas two arches in each bay, each subdivided by a colon-nette into two lights, and instead of being open backwardsto the roof space as is usual in England it has a solidback to a passage in the thickness of the wall, decoratedwith arcading and with a small doorway to the roofspace over the aisle. At Southwark also, as I havesaid, the triforium is closed by a back wall, but there isno passage in the wall. At Worcester the clerestoryalso has a passage in the wall which has a total thicknessof 5 feet. The vault is quadripartite with transversediagonal and wall ribs, and a longitudinal ridge rib withbosses but no ridge rib to the cross-vaults. There were originallyno flying buttresses, but only the shallow flat buttressshown on Fig. 94, though there is a sign of somethingof the kind having been contemplated under the aisleroof. There are now two massive buttresses, put up in1712, to arrest a serious bulging of the clerestory wall. Salisbury cathedral, setting aside the upper part ofthe tower and the spire, is one of the very few mediaevalbuildings which were built at one time, with one consistentdesign, and therefore show but one style throughout. Itmarks the final development of Early English architectureas yet untouched by the traceried window, which soonafter appeared and revolutionized the art.
