One more monument of this time may be mentioned.The Coronation chair (Fig. 102), which contains thefatal stone which Edward brought from Scone, on whichScottish kings had been crowned, and which we areto believe served Jacob for a pillow at Mahanaim. Thechair was at first to be made of bronze, and was partlyfinished in metal before the king altered his mind andpaid 100s. to Master Walter, the painter, for a chairof wood2. The famous stone is under the seat, enclosedwithin pierced quatrefoils, of which the front piece islost. The four leopards or lions below are not ancient. On the back was the figure of The Coro-a king seated and with his feet on a lion ; on the inside chairof the elbows are patterns of which one is shown inPlate LXXX. The ornament is very indistinct; myfull-size drawing was made more than 50 years ago,with the help of a candle, and working on the seat ofthe chair ; the upholstering and varnishing which thechair has undergone for two subsequent coronations mayhave completed the obliteration of the design. Thetracery panels on the outside of the arms may asBurges suggests have been filled with coloured glasson gilt or silver grounds. There is some decorationof that kind in the canopy of the priors seat in thechapter-house at Canterbury. Though now shabby andruined the Coronation chair was originally a superb pieceof furniture.
