f thescreen-wall is disagreeable and the ornament is tooevenly spread over the whole surface. Far more satisfactory is the front of Wells (PlateLXXII I), which is very like it in detail, but much betterin general design. Built by Bishop Jocelin, perhapsincluded in the consecration of 1239, at all eventsprobably finished before his death in 1242, it is in astyle entirely different from the nave. The westfront, says Freeman, is built in that form of EarlyGothic which is common in other parts of England, thestyle of Ely, Lincoln, and Salisbury. The rest of theearly work is built in a style which in England isalmost peculiar to Somersetshire, South Wales, and theneighbouring counties, and which is much more likeFrench work1.
