gave theopportunity for alteration, and for following the example ofother churches that had risen since Notre Dame wasdesigned, with larger windows and ampler space forpainted glass. The roses of the upper triforium J wereabolished and the clerestory windows P lengthened down-wards, widened, and filled with simple tracery: thewindows at the back of the triforium were shortened, andthe roof lowered. The double flight of the buttresseswas altered into a single flight as we now see them, themiddle pier being removed (Plate X). In 1258 a furtheralteration took place; the transepts were lengthenedone bay by the architect Jean de Chelles. Lastly, in1296, Bishop de Bucy filled in the spaces between thebuttresses of the apse with chapels opening by triplearches to the outer ambulatory aisle ; and this broughtthe plan to what we now see. Of these chapels thearchitect was Pierre de Chelles, presumably a son ofJean. They do not seem to have been finished till 1315. ch. v) EARLY FRENCH GOTHIC 81
Text Appearing After Image:
Paris. U- Notre Dame Second form xJ. G. A. Original form -.Fig. 30. (V.-le-Duc. 82 EARLY FRENCH GOTHIC (ch. v Paris. The choir, which is the oldest part, is five bays long: Dame °f which the first four are in pairs with sexpartite vaulting, and the fifth is slightly bowed outward, forming part ofthe apse which is a horseshoe in plan. Five narrowerbays form the semi-circular apse, which has ribs radiatingto the centre of the chord, where they are met by theribs of the fifth bay, which works in admirably with thesexpartite vault next to it. The rib of the fifth baybeing longer than the other four is made slightlysegmental. The vaulting of the double aisle round the apse isvery ingenious. The arches between the aisles aredoubled in number, and at the openings to Pierre deChelles chapels trebled ; so that in the chapel bay thereare three arches, and in the central aisle arcade two, toone in the main arcade of the choir. This makes thevaulting irregular, but the difficulty is well got over
