le Debonnaire lentone of his serfs, skilled in architecture, named Rumaud. It was finished by Hincmar, after 841, and improved byAdalberon in 976, who is said to have filled the windowswith painted glass1; and it underwent many other changesbefore it was burned down in 1210. On the first anni-versary of this catastrophe the foundation stone of thepresent building was laid by Archbishop Aubri deHumbert, and for the next twenty years the work waspushed on with vigour. Large sums were raised byperipatetic quests of the clergy, by Papal indulgences, and by the formation of Confraternities pledged to annualcontributions, and in 1241 the chapter was enabled totake possession of the new choir. In 1251 not only werefunds exhausted but the building was heavily in debt ;fresh appeals restored the finances, but the church wasnot finished till the end of the 14th century, nor theupper part of the towers till 1427. 1 ...diversas continentibus historias. Text Appearing After Image:
REIMS CATHEDRAL en. vi) EARLY FRENCH GOTHIC 107 It has generally been said that Robert de Coucy was Reimsthe original architect. He is so styled by Viollet-le-Duc. TheBut it has been pointed out by later writers that theepitaph of Robert de Coucy on his monument in thecloister of the abbey of S. Denis at Reims, which existedin the 1 Sth century, describing him as Maistre deNostre Dame et de Saint Nicaise, gave the date of hisdeath in 1311, a century too late. Fortunately par- Theticulars have been preserved of the labyrinth in the floor arc Uecof the cathedral, which was destroyed by the canons in1778 because children amused themselves by runninground the maze. At its corners were four compartmentscontaining figures of four Maitres de fcetivre, each holdingthe square or compass of his profession : Bernard deSoissons, master for 25 years, qui fit cinq voiites etouvra a t0 : Gaucher de Reims, master for 5 years, qui ouvra aux voussures et portaux; Jean dOrbais, qui enconwienga la coiffe
