less advanced in style is the choir of S. Saviourscathedral, Southwark, which was built after a fire in 1213(Plate LXX). The construction is extremely massive.The piers, alternately circular and polygonal, have clusteredshafts attached to all four sides, those carrying the arcadecorbelled off just below the capital, the others rising tocarry the vaults of nave and aisle respectively. Thearticulation of the bays is well defined by these vaultingshafts. The triforium, of four equal arches to a bay, hasa solid wall at back instead of being open as usual inEngland, and there is no passage in the thickness of thewall from bay to bay. The clerestory, like that inLincoln choir, is a refined version of the Norman triple-arched clerestories, but it has only one lancet lightinstead of the three at Lincoln. All the capitals aremoulded. The wall-rib of the vault is much stilted andthe panel winds a great deal in order to give room forthe arcade of the clerestory. The vaulting is quadri- Plate LXX

Beyond the east wall of the choir, which is faced witha reredos of many storied niches like those at Winchester,Christchurch, and S. Albans, is a retro-choir three bayslong and four bays wide, one bay on each side corre-sponding to the aisle, and two to the choir. Fourchapels originally occupied the east end. All four aislesare of one height and have quadripartite vaults, withribs of the same section throughout, and as the ashlarsare laid English fashion the conoids seem more thanhalf-way towards the fan vaults of Gloucester1. Thisretro-choir is charming, but it is now made detestablydark by modern glass. Contemporary with S. Saviours is the eastern part of Southwell C3.th.cd T3.1 Southwell Cathedral which was begun by ArchbishopWalter de Grey in 1215. The architect here had alighter hand, and though the capitals of
