—Tomb of I leni v III ch. xvi) WESTMINSTER ABBEY 283 replaced in the present wooden case erected by Abbot The Con-Feckenham, who also repaired the lower part with shrinepainted plaster to imitate mosaic, and put a paintedinscription of his own over the original one, which wasworked with dark blue glass on a gold ground. The shrine is of Purbeck marble slabs on edge,forming three recesses on each side where sick pilgrimssuffering from the kings evil could place themselvesin hope of the miraculous cure which the saint is saidto have effected in his lifetime by his touch1. Thewhole was covered and lined with Roman Peters glassmosaic, of which little now remains. In the spiral shaftsand their inlay, like those in the cloister of S. GiovanniLaterano, and S.
