Spain elected PrinceLeopold of Hohenzollern, a relative ofKing William of Prussia, to fill theirvacant throne. This step gave thegreatest umbrage to the French govern-ment ; and though, by the advice ofWilliam I. of Prussia, Prince Leopoldresigned his candidature, it was not sat-isfied, but demanded an assurance thatPrussia would at no future period sanc-tion his claims. 16S THE NEW GERMAN EMPIRE. This assurance the king refused togive; and on the 19th of July the em-peror of the French proclaimed waragainst Prussia. THE BATTLE OFcommanded by the Crown-prince ofPrussia, at the disposal of King Wil-liam. By the end of July the forces of bothcountries were congregated on the fron-tier Napoleon, however, lost a fort-night in delays after the -leclaration ofwar, and it was discovered that theFrench army was by no means in a stateof satisfactory preparation, while the GRAVELOTTE. the rapidly following battles of Weis-senburg, August 4th, Worth and Spic-heren, both August 6tli, were importantGerman victories. The German ad-vance was hardly checked for a moment,though the losses on both sides werevery heavy. The battle of Gravelotte,in which King William commanded inperson, was fought on the i8tli ; andthough the Germans suffered immense THE NEW GERMAN EMPIRE. 161 loss, they were again victorious, andforced Bazaine to shut himself up inMetz. The Emperor Napoleon and MarshalMacMahon in vain attempted to proceedto the relief of Bazaine. They weresurrounded at Sedan, and completelydefeated with heavy loss.
