Can-ning attempted to secure the same ob-ject, but died too soon. The accessionof the ministry of the Duke of Welling-ton greatly dampened the hopes of theCatholics; but they were soon revivedby the sudden display of strength hythe Irish Catholics, who elected DanielOConnell, a popular politician, to aseat in parliament. OConnell was sus-tained by the entire Catholic populationof Ireland, and demanded the removalof the disabilities of his co-religionistSfthreatening civil war as the alternative. The danger was very great, and theDuke of Wellington brought in a billwhich he declared was the only meansof averting civil war, and which ad-mitted Romanists to parliament and toall civil and military offices under thecrown, save those of regent, lord chan-cellor in England and Ireland, lordlieutenant of Ireland, and some others.

In 1828 another reform was accom-plished in favor of the Protestant dis-senters by the repeal of the laws requir-ing all persons taking office to receivethe holy communion according to theforms of the established church. William IV. on the Throne. On the 26th of June, 1830, GeorgeIV., who had passed the last years ofhis life in seclusion at Windsor Castle,died. His only child, the PrincessCharlotte, being dead, he was succeededby his brother William Henry, Dukeof Clarence, who became king as Wil-liam IV. The reformed parliament—the objectof so many hopes and fears—met on the29th of January, 1833. ^^ passed severalimportant acts, but its violence—espec-ially that of the great Irish agitator,OCouncil—went far to justify the fearsof its enemies and produce a feeling ofreaction in the country.
