After the Congress of Vienna, bywhich the extent of the Danish mon-archy was considerably reduced, thecourt of Copenhagen was from time totime disquieted by a spirit of discontentmanifesting itself in the duchies, andespecially in that of Holstein, the out-break of which in 1848 threatened themonarchy with complete dissolution.A short recapitulation of the relation ofthe different parts of the kingdom toeach other will furnish a key to thebetter comprehension of these internaltroubles. Severalcollateral branches arose afterwards, ofwhich those that survived were—theAugustenburg and Glucksburg branchesbelong to the royal line, and the ducalHolstein-Gottorp branch, the head ofwhich was Peter III. of Russia. In 1762 Peter threatened Denmarkwith a war, the avowed object of whichwas the recovery of Schleswig, whichhad been expressly guaranteed to theDanish Crown by England and Franceat the Peace of Stockholm, 1720. Hissudden dethronement, however, pre-vented him from putting this designinto execution. The Empress Cath-arine agreed to an accommodation,which was signed at Copenhagen in1764, and subsequently confirmed bythe Emperor Paul, 1773, by which theducal part of Schleswig was ceded tothe Crown of Denmark.
