. Thespeech of their chief warrior and prophetWitherford, on the occasion of his sur-render to General Jackson, and as re-ported by him at the time, dej-irvesperpetuation. I am, said he, in your power.Do with me as you please. I am a sohdier. I have done the white people allthe harm I could. I have fought them, and fought them bravely. If I had anarmy, I would yet fight, and contend tothe last. But I have none. My peopleare all gone. I can now do no more thanweep over the misfortunes of my nation.Once I could animate my warriors tobattle ; but I cannot animate the dead.My warriors can no longer hear myvoice. Their bones are at Talladega,Tallusahatchee, Emuckfau, and Toho-peka. I have not surrendered myselfthoughtlessly. Whilst there were anychances for success, I never left my post, nor supplicated peace. But my peopleare gone; and I now ask it for my na-tion and for myself. The operations on the sea in 1813continued, upon the whole, to add lustreto the infant navy of the United States.
