Moreover, should the Federal govern-ment be successful, the question ofslavery would practically be settled for-ever, for its abolition would be certainwhen the Union was re-established.One of the first results of the act wasthe formation of regiments of negro sol-diers. An attack made by one of theseregiments, under Colonel Shaw, uponFort Wagner, in Charleston harbor,though unsuccessful, showed so muchbravery that the prejudice against negrosoldiers disappeared, and great numberswere enrolled.
