Get-tysburg campaign. Lee moved slowlyback to his old position on the Rapidan,where he and Meade held each other incheck until the following spring. Manyin the North were inclined to believethat Lees former successes had beendue to Stonewall Jacksons ability, andthat he had lost his prestige upon thedeath of that brave commander. Bntthe campaign of 1864 was to prove thecontrary. Grants Victory at Vicksburg. On the next day after the battle ofGettysburg, General Grant gained a de-cisive victory on the Mississippi. Hav-ing failed in several attempts to takeVicksburg from the North, he now de-termined to transfer his army to thesouth side of this strongly-fortified place.To do this it was necessary to cross theriver, march down its west bank, cros^again below Vicksburg, and march upthe east bank, while the fleet, whichhad run past the batteries of Vicksburgafter the capture of New Orleans, wouldhave to pass them again in order totransport the army over the river andprotect the crossing.
